Dr. Jeremy Nienow will discuss the results of the 2019 archaeological survey along Fish Creek in southern Maplewood. The survey was sponsored by the Maplewood Area Historical Society, Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department, and the Metro Area Historical Society Collaborative (comprised of the Ramsey, Dakota and Scott County Historical Societies). Fish Creek, connecting Carver Lake and the Mississippi River, is known to have pottery fragments and stone tool chips which date to the Native American Woodland Period (500B.C.-1650 A.D.). Dr. Nienow will also discuss artifacts artifacts found by previous archaeological surveys, objects from a private collection, and information on nearby mounds which were also from the same time period. The talk will also include future opportunities for becoming involved with efforts along the Creek.
