Summary
Ramsey County Historical Society asked researchers to explore the lives of Legends & Landmarks, a project which sought to create quality research files on 100 individuals in Ramsey County. These individuals have contributed to Minnesota History and to our community, and are currently absent from our well-known narrative. The researchers were tasked to investigate the stories of these individuals, and address as many of the missing pieces from our history as possible while addressing State Social Studies Standards at the Grade 6 level.
Education Standards-Legends & Landmarks

Our project goal was to assemble final research files that included at least 70 individuals that are frequently absent from current textbooks, including women and individuals from non-dominant cultural backgrounds. With over 100 languages spoken in Ramsey County, we were looking for a truly diverse group of individuals to research and present.

Nominations for both individuals and locations to research were solicited from our entire community. Researchers were also solicited, and were vetted. Individuals selected for research were active in or connected to Ramsey County at any point between approximately 1800 through 2016.  A brief description of why they should be included in the project, and which of the following historical themes with which they should be associated was requested for each individual nominated:
Citizenship, Civil Rights, Globalization, Government, Immigration, Indigenous Peoples, Industry, Technology, Transportation, Urbanization, Social/Community Impact.

The research files may include the following:

  • Biographical information on the person: Birth date and year, full name and any aliases, birth city & country, dates they lived in Ramsey County (if applicable), death date/city/country, ethnicity, and gender.
  • At least two, and as many as ten images related to the person in question.
  • A two-page summary of the individual profiled that highlights their contributions to the community.
  • A minimum of 10 pages, and a maximum of 100 pages, of source material including: Listing of known immediate family members; known residences/addresses; work/employment history; connections to/involvement with civic organizations; listing of government service, including appointments, elected office, military service, etc; photocopies of important papers; newspaper articles; biographical information previously published; oral history transcripts; interviews; etc. All sources were cited.
  • For individuals profiled as part of larger manuscripts, photocopies of relevant pages, as well as a citation of the source manuscript and where that manuscript can be found. For individuals with extensive personal papers housed at research institutions like Ramsey County Historical Society or the Minnesota Historical Society, files may contain summaries of what is available and where it is located. Photocopies of representative papers may be included in the research file.
  • For individuals notable for their engagement with civic organizations, identification of where meeting minutes or other documentation of that service can be found may be included.
