Como Aristonian Club Papers 1919-2004

This club was formed by a group of women who had worked rolling bandages for the Red Cross during World War I. Following the war, many of the women wished to continue their association and created this groups whose motto was “acquire knowledge and with it get understanding.” The group was associated with the Minnesota Federation of Women in 1922. The group continued as a study group, which also made annual charitable donations. Material consists of club business records including minutes, member booklets, membership lists, and a scrapbook of events from the inception of the club.

Davern/Sattler Family Collection 1825-2007

Material consists of largely of photographs of members of the Davern and Sattler families. Also included are articles on various family members, especially William Quin Davern and the Davern farmhouse. A good part of the collection is genealogical material on the Davern, Sattler, and related families. William Quin Davern was a pioneer settler on 160 acres just east of Fort Snelling. The original farm bounded by Montreal Street on the north, Morgan Street on the south, Snelling Avenue on the east, and Fairview Avenue on the west remained in the family until 1917. The farmhouse at 1173 Davern Avenue, began in 1862 and finished in 1868, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 1983. There are a number of articles about the Davern property in the collection. Also of note are photographs of the Sattler pharmacy at 1189 North Snelling Avenue. Mary Gertrude Davern, the 12th child of William Quin Davern and Catherine Theresa Ryan Davern, married Charles Peter Sattler, who ran this pharmacy. In addition to Sattler family genealogy, there are genealogical files of the related Hoshette and Ihme families.

Materials include the personal financial and estate records of John Grace, Ramsey County Sheriff 1870-1876; receipts and check stubs documenting Grace family transactions as well as many St. Paul business concerns from the 1860s to the late 1880s; bonds, insurance policies, tax receipts, wills, and photographs (2012.17.2 – 2012.17.15) also document the Grace family. The collection includes correspondence and business course ledgers and journals from son, John Grace while at Notre Dame University in the 1870s; estate matters of the James Duffy (handled by John Grace) and the Cody-Buckley estate; an 1871 circular on Minnesota state bonds; a 5th annual convention of the C.T.A. Union (Catholic Temperance Association) ribbon (June 21, 1876) (2012.17.16); a Rand McNally railroad guide (1890); and oversize Insurance Policies (1880-1885) (2012.17.17 – 2017.17.23).

Hand In Hand Productions Collection 1942-2006

This collection contains oral history interview transcripts with longtime residents of the Rondo Community who discuss neighborhood businesses, families, churches, schools, organizations, social life, and the challenges of growing up in St. Paul from the 1920s through the 1960s. The Rondo Community is an urban neighborhood located on the plateau above and west of St. Paul’s downtown commercial district, which was bisected in the 1960s by the construction of I-94, which resulted in the removal of approximately 750 homes and 90% of the commercial businesses. These transcripts include photographs of the interviewee as well as Rondo neighborhood scenes. Also included are historical articles on African-American history in St. Paul, collected by interviewer Kate Cavett, as well as files documenting the finding of Hand in Hand Productions.

HIV/AIDS Healthcare Worker Oral History Collection 1993-2016

Materials includes newsletters and magazine articles describing the Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies at the University of Minnesota, and the purpose and scope of the Minnesota HIV/AIDS Healthcare Worker Oral History Project. The bulk of the collection consists of oral history transcripts of healthcare workers who cared for Minnesota patients during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Two books are included: one is a compilation of other health care worker oral histories from around the country while the other is a history of the various Gay-Lesbian-Transgender-Bisexual communities in Minnesota.

Sanborn (1883-1964) and his career and retirement as a Judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit.

Records of predecessor and allied organizations such as the Hamline Midway Local Development Company and the University Midway Development Company appear in this collection, as do records on the development of International Marketplace and Dickerman Park, both on University Avenue.
