AMERICAN DISTRICT TELEGRAPH COMPANY OF ST. PAUL COLLECTION     1886-2001

This collection consists of two minute books in good condition, three check registers, two stock certificate books, Articles of Incorporation (renewal), contracts, and a city ordinance.  A good deal of the collection contains correspondence with stockholders and the corporate tax returns.  Also part of the collection is an embossing stamp and an oversized photograph of ADT president Harold Shugard. AMHOIST COLLECTION     1880-1985

Material includes business-related correspondence, publications, advertisements, photographs of employees, equipment and work done and in progress.  Mechanical drawings and some hourly employee biographies included.  Photographs encompass the changes within the company and the products it produced.  Top-level employees’ photos and correspondence are included. Material includes of typed appearance schedules on which she has made handwritten comments about some of the events; newspaper clippings of her time in the Senior Royalty; a 16mm film reel about the 1938-1939 Winter Carnival; certificates of achievement; typed correspondence to her; and programs of events in which she participated or attended.

CLEVELAND (HORACE WILLIAM SHALER) COLLECTION     1872-1943

Material consists of family material, ie. history, genealogy, cemeteries used.  The majority is business-related, including speeches given by Horace Cleveland and information published about him. Available for consultation and duplication. 

COMO ARISTONIAN CLUB PAPERS     1919 – 2004

This club was formed from the group of women who had worked rolling bandages for the Red Cross during World War I.  Following the war, many of the women wished to continue their association and created this groups whose motto is “Acquire knowledge and with it get understanding.”  The group was associated with the Minnesota Federation of Women in 1922.  The group continued as a study group, which also made annual charitable donations.  Material consists of club business records including minutes, member booklets, membership lists, and a scrapbook of events from the inception of this club.

CONZETT (JOSIAH) COLLECTION 1890-1903

Material consists of a scrapbook (1909 and 1899-1903) and a diary (1890-1913) kept by Josiah. Available for consultation and duplication.

CRANE AND ORDWAY COLLECTION 1892 - 1965

Material consists of  several decades of catalogues representing the plumbing, dairy supplies/equipment, and steam fittings sold by the companies, as well as employee textbooks and directories, and reminiscences, including one by Richard Teller Crane. Available for consultation and duplication.

 

DAVERN/SATTLER FAMILY COLLECTION   1825 – 2007

Material consists of largely of photographs of members of the Davern and Sattler families. Also included are articles on various family members, especially William Quin Davern and the Davern farmhouse. A good part of the collection is genealogical material on the Davern, Sattler, and related families.  
William Quin Davern was a pioneer settler on 160 acres just east of Fort Snelling. The original farm bounded by Montreal Street on the north, Morgan Street on the south, Snelling Avenue on the east, and Fairview Avenue on the west remained in the family until 1917. The farmhouse at 1173 Davern Avenue, began in 1862 and finished in 1868, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 1983. There are a number of articles about the Davern property in the collection.  Also of note are photographs of the Sattler pharmacy at 1189 North Snelling Avenue. Mary Gertrude Davern, the 12th child of William Quin Davern and Catherine Theresa Ryan Davern, married Charles Peter Sattler, who ran this pharmacy. In addition to Sattler family genealogy, there are genealogical files of the related Hoshette and Ihme families.  Available for consultation and duplication.

METZGER (MAX) COLLECTION  1921-2007

Material contains biographical information on Max Metzger, long time director of the St. Paul Como Park Pops Orchestra, and his parents, Mady Metzger-Ziegler, mezzo-soprano, and Ludwig Metzger, Shakespearian actor.  Much of the collection consists of photographs of Max Metzger, his mother, and various other singers and musicians. Also included are photocopied newspaper clippings, programs, and correspondence, which document the careers of both mother and son.

Material consists of a UMN college scrapbook, which includes some newspaper clippings and other memorabilia from her years at the University High School from which she graduated as the salutatorian.  Marguerite’s husband was Heck W. RONDO ORAL HISTORY PROJECT COLLECTION    2004

This collection of interviews with long-time residents of the Rondo Community describe the neighborhood businesses, families, churches, schools, and organizations.  The Rondo Community is an urban neighborhood located on the plateau above and west of St. Paul’s downtown commercial district, which was bisected in the 1960s by the construction of I-94, which resulted in the removal approximately 750 homes and 90% of commercial businesses.  These bound interview transcript binders include photographs for each interviewee.  Available for consultation and duplication.

ST. PAUL BUSINESS LICENSE APPLICATION COLLECTION 1920-2005
25 cubic foot boxes and 14 trays
Material consists of typed index cards and business license applications arranged alphabetically in street address order.  The cards reference every business license by address,  including the name of the licensee, the type of license, the license number, and the date of the license.  The applications themselves are foldered by address, many times with multiple applications at a particular address.

ST. PAUL CITY DIRECTORY REFERENCE CARD INDEX COLLECTION 1840-1920

Material consists of reference notes pertaining to residents of the Historic Hill, Irvine Park, and Dayton’s Bluff areas, taken from the St. Paul City Directories, which trace individual residents, their occupations, and addresses. Available for consultation and duplication.

ST. PAUL MOTHER’S PENSION LEDGER COLLECTION    1913-1938

Material consists of 6 leather bound paper ledgers that contain data on St. Paul Mothers Pension Payments including names, dates, and residential addresses.  The original intention of St. Paul Mother’s Pensions was to provide a universal subsidy to mothers with dependent children without an adult male income.

SANBORN (General John B.) FAMILY COLLECTION 1860 – 1972

 Material consists of a few items relating to General John B. Sanborn’s (1826- 1904) military service and correspondence with him from military personnel and family during that time.  There are three business ledgers relating to his work as a lawyer in St. Paul in the firm Sanborn, French, and Lund (1854–1859).  The remainder relates to his son, Judge John B. Sanborn (1883-1964) and his career and retirement as a Judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit.  Available for consultation and duplication.
