SCHOOLHOUSE
![]() |
Heman and Jane valued the education of their children and in 1870 hired Miss Mary Lake to teach their children. In 1873 school district 17 was established and the Gibbs schoolhouse was built near the family farmhouse. The schoolhouse, located on
the southwest corner of Larpenteur and Cleveland avenues, saw many
renovations until it closed in the 1960’s. The building was used for storage
by the University of Minnesota and later abandoned. |

The Stoen School was built in 1882 to serve as the local schoolhouse near Milan in Chippewa County, Minnesota. It was in used until 1965 when the school board closed it due to a drop in attendance. During last year of operation, three students attended the Stoen School. The Stoen Schoolhouse was
brought to the Gibbs Farm Museum in 1966. This building serves as an example
of a one-room schoolhouse like the one the Gibbs children would have
attended. |

Both the Gibbs schoolhouse and the Stoen schoolhouse were one room schoolhouses. The teachers in these schools had lots of different jobs to do. Along with teaching students in first through eighth grades, they served as principal, as janitor, and as the counselor. After finishing school, most pioneer children went to work on the farm with their parents or other relatives. Some students continued their studies in a secondary (high) school. A very few people would continue their education at a university or college. |
