Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakota Life Calendar of Events 2014

Gibbs Museum 2014 Hours/Admissions:

 Open to the Public:
Saturdays - Sundays
May 24 - October 26
10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Regular Admissions Rates: $8 adults / $7 seniors 62+ / $5 children (ages 3 - 16)
RCHS members receive Free Regular Admission
(some special programs may not qualify for free admission)

 Office Hours: year around, Monday - Friday 9am-4pm
Scheduled Tours/Field Trips: On-Site May - first week of November Monday-Friday
Outreach: Monday - Friday, November - April and May - October if staff is available

Other events/tours: By special appointment yearly as needed/if staff is available

Our lot is located at the north end of the site off Cleveland Avenue.

Anniversary Series
"All About Our Farm"
Fun and Facts - All About Our Farm!

All About Our Tipi - Saturday, June 7
In the 1800s, Dakota lived in tipi most of the year. Learn why tipi are so sound; help put one up; experience what it was like living in a tipi, and make a paper one to take home.

 All About Our Animals - Saturday, July 5
Like most 1800s families, the Gibbs relied on their animals for day-to-day life. Learn about the kinds of animals they had and visit the animals we have at the farm today.

 All About Our Gardens and Prairie - Saturday, July 19
Enjoy a walking tour of the various landscapes at the farm; compare and contrast our pioneer and Dakota crop gardens; learn about native Minnesota plants used for medicines.


All About Our Soddy - Saturday, August 23
The first home the Gibbs built in 1849 was a "soddy," a 10'x12' log home with a prairie roof. Learn about how the soddy was constructed, what life was like in the soddy, and how we learned about it through an archeological dig.


Ice Cream Sundays
Make ice cream the old-fashioned way and then enjoy a sample of the
Gibbs Famous Home-made Ice Cream!

Sunday, June 15:
Happy Father's Day - free entry for dads.

Sunday, July 13:
Beat the heat with an ice cream cone.

Sunday, August 3:
Build your own Sundae.

Special Events

2014 Pioneer Sampler: School, Work and Play
June 21, 2014
Cost: $8 Adults, $7 Seniors (62+),
$5 children (4+).
Free for RCHS members.
The farm comes alive with hands-on old-time crafts, games and chores.
Don't miss our famous petting zoo and free pony rides. This year's event includes Doin' the Wash, Candle Dipping, Cupcake Walk, Fish Pond, Cornhusk Dolls, free food and much more.

Dakota Day
August 16
NEW THIS YEAR: We celebrate Minnesota’s First People with the Pond Dakota Heritage Society!
10:00am – 4:00pm
Cost: $8 adults, $7 Seniors (62+),
$5 children (4+).
Free for RCHS and Pond Dakota Heritage Society members.
For several years we have celebrated Dakota Day at the Gibbs Museum site. This year, we join with the Pond Heritage Society in Bloomington, Minnesota as we share common narratives of the Dakota of Cloud Man’s Village as well as Dakota language and stories, past and present.

The two-site event features presentations, mini-language seminars, walking tours, crafts, games, Dakota-inspired food and much more.
Free shuttle bus transportation between sites provided.

Apple Festival
September 20, 2014
10:00am – 4:00pm
Cost: $8 adults, $7 Seniors (62+),
$5 children (4+).
Free for RCHS members.
Apple Crafts, Apple Games, Apple Treats!
A day of apple fun ~ all in the beautiful setting of Gibbs Museum.
Enjoy our horse-drawn hayrides, visit our Heritage Apple Orchard and learn about Minnesota apples, make apple critters and bob for apples, free food and much more.

 Gibbs Halloween
October 25, 2014
10:00am – 4:00pm
Cost: $8 adults, $7 Seniors (62+),
$5 children (4+).
Free for RCHS members.
Celebrate Halloween the old-fashioned way!
Make popcorn balls, find pennies in the haystack, enter the costume contest, trick-or-treat at the Gibbs' farmhouse, visit our pumpkin patch, free food and much more.
